Gateways Updates

I can’t believe it’s only been a week since I launched this site and announced to the world (and by the world, I mean Facebook) that Gateways will officially be self-published! Thank you all for the love and support.

Here’s the status of things so far:

– Gateways has been through two very helpful rounds of editing with a great Toronto-based editor, Allister Thompson. At this point the text is final. It’s done. It could be published tomorrow, but . . .

– Cover art and map art are still being worked on. I have been in conversations with a cover art designer and we’ve had a few e-mails back and forth at this point. I will update you again as that process unfolds.

– There’s also the whole question of formatting it for e-book. The two main e-book distributors both recommend doing your formatting in Word, which their software will automatically convert to the major e-book formats. Luckily, both distributors seem to like their Word files formatted the same way, so it looks like I’ll only have to learn how to do it once. In fact, last weekend I did most of the formatting work. The main step I still have to do is to build the linked table of contents, because as you may know, in e-books there are no fixed pages with page numbers (because the amount of text that fits on a page depends on the reader’s settings which the reader can constantly change). So you need a linked table of contents to take you around.

– And then there’s the marketing. I’m really hoping to have a lot of fun with this, actually. There will be giveaways, pre-orders, sample chapters, and even, if all goes according to plan, an epic launch party.

Thanks again, everybody. More updates soon.
